Salt Mines Hallein – a short trip
Action-packed holiday for cultural connoisseurs
The Salt Mines Hallein are home to the oldest salt mines in the world. They are open all year around and the special events they host draw many visitors to this popular site.
Between Wagrain and Salzburg is the Celtic town Hallein and the village of Bad Dürrnberg. Here were once extensive salt mines, which made the prince-archbishops of Salzburg rich and powerful. Today the mines at Hallein are open to the public.
Salt mines of Hallein: 30 minutes from Wagrain
Once you’ve come to the mines, you get a new outfit – a collier’s garb. Dressed all in white, a little train takes you deep into the tunnels of the mines. Since 2004 Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau is the tour guide and tells you about the ‘white gold’ and its history.
A thrilling experience and history in the salt mines of Hallein
A visit of the mines is not only education however – after all, you are on holiday. Crossing the salt lake in the mountain with a raft or speeding down the slides deep into the earth are also highlights of the mines.
What to expect from a trip to Hallein:
- two long colliers' slides
